Welcome to Sports Management! This half-year course is designed for students who are interested in the daily operations and decision making processes of their favorite sports team or learning what it takes to be an executive in the sporting industry. In this course, you will learn how teams are owned and operated within today’s dynamic global economy. Students will also be given a board understanding of the sports business sector by exploring available career opportunities, the development of the sport management profession, and how to manage within the pressures of human resources, ethics, societal influences and media relations. Utilizing specific environments from professional sports franchises and leagues, students will be introduced to basic managerial principles and philosophies through the context of the sports industry. The exploration of these topics will be studied and applied in an active, “hands-on” participative environment, through class projects, Internet simulations, and general classroom lectures. The class concludes with a written final exam during exam week.

The Fantasy Basketball Draft is Here!

Sports Managers:

In preparation for our draft, I want you to visit our Fantasy League Page by clicking on the link to the right of this post. By browsing through the league, you will get an idea of what the league rules are, your roster requirements, and be able to search which players are currently scoring the most points. During the season, you will be able to check your own scores, standings and schedules.

After you check out each of these things you may want to figure out which players your team should try to draft, along with when you should draft them. You should print out player lists, roster requirements, and anything else you think your team is going to need to be successful in your draft. A bad draft will almost certainly lead to a bad season, and no chance to win the league prize.

The ESPN Draft Kit can be found by clicking here.

Current stats of players in the league can be found by clicking here.

So do your draft homework and bring your draft materials to class!

Ask around too! Seeking out advice from family and friends is always encouraged (even though it might not be great advice that you get!)
